Vietnamese See Parallel Between The Vietnamese people have some friendly advice for the United
States: Don’t make the same mistake twice. Get out of Iraq before it’s
too late. In two dozen interviews, Vietnamese from across the country noted some key differences between the two conflicts, such as the lack of a unified Iraqi opposition. But nearly all said there was a common theme: imperialist wars of aggression in which a rich, powerful country meddles in the affairs of a smaller, weaker foe whose culture it doesn’t understand. The result, they say, could be another quagmire. (For more information on this story visit: http://www.commondreams.org/headlines04/0421-10.htm)

Deadline for advertising in How To Stretch Your Organic Food Dollars Although the price of organic foods has been steadily dropping, due to better distribution and larger economies of scale, organic foods, on average, are still more expensive than conventional foods. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer published an article recently that offers tips for stretching your organic food dollars. Some suggested methods include buying in bulk, starting a buying club, growing and canning your own food, joining a Community Supported Agriculture program (CSA), and getting shopper discounts by volunteering at your local co-op. Thirsty Ear Festival Is On Hiatus In 2004 The annual Santa Fe Thirsty Ear Festival, which takes place each Labor Day weekend, will be on hiatus in 2004 as the festival works to reorganize as a non-profit. “We’ve been talking about reorganizing for years,” says festival founder and director Michael Koster. “Last year things just got so big—we’ve been growing by a few hundred people every year since the first one in 1999—that we knew we had to retrench and, for me personally, to refocus. It’s a huge amount of work. By converting to a non-profit, I’ll be able to bring in others and run it in more of a cooperative kind of way. Also, the festival has always been a labor of love, and any profit just goes right back into the next year’s fest. Thirsty Ear is not, by nature, a commercial venture.” Koster says the non-profit status will give Thirsty Ear access to grants and allow the organization to build an educational component that he hasn’t had the time or money to develop in the past. The new status will also allow individuals and businesses who donate funds to write off their contributions. A new, reorganized Thirsty Ear Festival will resume on Labor Day weekend 2005 with a wide array of roots music artists. Meanwhile, Thirsty Ear’s American Icons Series and its new Gallery Concerts continue with several performances throughout 2004 and 2005. See www.thirstyearfestival.com for updates.
